CARTER ACRES
Our equine pages would not be complete without telling you how they came to be. My father, Russ Silha,
started breeding and raising registered Quarter Horses over 50 years ago. We will be having our 53nd
Annual Production Sale in August 2012. Dad's first earthly love was my mom (they celebrated 50 years
of marriage before he passed away in 1997), followed by us kids and then the horses (OK some days he
liked the horses better than us kids....don't you???) Dad loved training young horses and passed that
love onto me. He did it the old fashioned way compared to today's methods, but he never broke a horse's
spirit and they performed in amazing ways for him. He loved to show his horses and his Border Collie
dogs to anyone who wanted to see them. He treated everyone as a friend and he seldom forgot a name.
My mom, Fran, continued his legacy with my brother, Logan until she passed away in January 2011.
Logan and his wife, Diana, will continue to operate the Lazy JS Ranch at Bowman, ND (See this link.
www.lazyjsranch.com) The picture on the left at the bottom of the page is the driveway into my home yard
and the right is a spectacular view from one of the range pastures. Except for the common droughts and
the prevalent winds, I miss the slower way of life and my family immensely.

Quarter Horse Stallions
We are proud of our stallion battery. These stallions have individual strengths that we use to
complement our mares. They are all pleasant to handle and get along with or they wouldn't stay
around. Our kids can walk into the pens without having to worry about their actions.
Find photos and pedigrees on this page of the following stallions: You may double-click on the

"Raising Performance Horses with a Solid Foundation"
|
We purchased this beautiful buckskin stallion at the Lapke Quarter Horse Production Sale in Dunlap
Iowa in August of 2009. His sire is a full brother to legendary Shining Spark and his dam is a
granddaughter of Poco Bueno, who is foundation breeding at its very best. We are looking forward to
what this young horse can do for our breeding program.
Rush is proving to be a super sire. His disposition is wonderful. I've finally been able to do some
riding this fall (previously I had babies and toddlers!) and Rush has been "on the list." He rides
like a rocking chair and with only limited riding I've been able to use Rush to pony my youngest,
Zach on his pony. The other night we were doing that, headed down a ditch at a good clip and he
stepped in a hole. He didn't miss a beat. Later we jumped a hole...again, never getting upset or
scared. He is very level headed and his foals have also been easy to handle and train. 2012 will
mark the last foal crop from Rush as he lost one testicle so we elected to geld him.
Our first replacement daughter by him is doing exceptionally well in Pleasure training. The
trainer has had several offers to buy her already and she's not been to her first show yet!
Sterling's sire, Fancy Red Bark, stood at the Lazy JS Ranch for nearly 20 years. My dad, Russ
Silha, used him for everything he needed to do. The horse was never "shown" but he certainly
could have. His athletic ability was surpassed only by his amazingly mild disposition. His foals
inherited that and many have gone on to become elite broodmares in noteworthy programs like
Lapke Quarter Horses at Dunlap, IA. Sterlings mother was used all over the ranch as well and
was a noted favorite among any of the kids who needed something gentle to ride. Sterling's foals
are similar in manner, many of them seeking out people for attention even before they've been
worked with. We look forward to getting them under saddle! Sterling is started under saddle and
is coming along well with my limited training experience of stallions.

VP Haidas Black Star
2004 Black Stallion
Thank you to Allen & Diane McDaniel for the opportunity to lease VP Haidas Black Star for the
2012 breeding season. We look forward to his foals in 2013, adding another splash of
performance to our pedigrees to help make them marketable in this tough equine economy.
Viper's superior disposition fits in well with the rest of our program and we think his superior
conformation will complement our mares well.
